Norwegian club Sogndal signs Ronney Onyango from Gor Mahia

The highly-rated right-back has finally achieved his dream of turning professional and joining a European club after several failed attempts

Norwegian second-tier club Sogndal has announced the signing of Harambee Stars defender Ronney Onyango from Kenyan champions Gor Mahia.

Onyango, 23, has joined the 99-year-old club on a two-year contract after impressing during trials in February.

"Onyango was on trial with us in February, featuring in pre-season friendlies against Hødd, Aalesund, and Stabæk. After that, he represented Kenya in World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Gabon. We can now finally present him as our newest player," Sogndal stated on its website.

Speaking to the club’s media team, Onyango—formerly of the now-defunct Wazito FC—expressed his excitement about the move.

"I'm very happy to sign for Sogndal because I really wanted to come here after the trial. I look forward to improving myself and giving my best so that we can achieve great things together as a team," he said.

Onyango will wear jersey number 88 in honour of his late father.

"My father and I shared the same birthday, August 8, so 8/8 was special to us. I chose number 88 to honour him after he passed away. I play for him, and I am sure he is proud of me today," he added.

Sogndal, currently 14th in the 16-team Norwegian First Division after a 2-1 loss in their season opener, will face Aalesund at home on Saturday, April 5. Onyango is expected to make his debut in that match.

The club has been competing in the second tier since 2018 following relegation from the top flight. With Onyango’s arrival, Sogndal aims to strengthen their defence as they push for promotion.
